How Pets Get Through the Winter in Good Shape

Dogs:
When going for walks in winter you will have to adapt to the circumstances. For example the time your dog spends waiting outside the supermarket needs to be shortened in low temperatures, as dogs get cold very quickly when they are not moving. If your dog starts shivering or has its tail between its legs, you should shorten the walk and get your dog into the warm again quickly. Winter clothes such as coats and pullovers can help protect your pet against wet and cold weather.
Dog shoes can be useful for pets with sensitive feet as well, as they stop salt, grit and ice from damaging their pads. Dog owners should pay special attention that their dog does not eat snow, as it is often mixed with dirt and salt, and in combination with the cold this can lead to vomiting, diarrhoea and even gastritis and enteritis. After walking your dog, don’t forget to remove salt and lumps of snow from your dog’s coat and feet. Pay special attention to the fact that e.g. when your dog is lying on cold tiles in the hall, a wet coat can easily lead to cystitis or pneumonia.

Cats:
Cats that are free to roam outdoors should always have the option to come indoors. This works best with a cat flap in a window or a door. Inside it is ideal to provide a quiet place where the cat can get warm again. For this purpose lying platforms for radiators, cuddly caves or fluffy beanbags are well suited.

Rabbits and Guinea Pigs:
Small animals that are kept outdoors can spend the winter outside. Their hutch should be well insulated and supplied with ample straw and hay to protect them against the cold. It is advisable to provide a protected area for sleeping.  Small animals keep warm by moving, so rabbits and guinea pigs need enough space to move about.

Shield your pet not only from the cold, but also from draughts. There are suitable protective covers that protect against wind and wetness. Drinking water as well as wet litter should be changed regularly, as both can freeze easily.  In the cold, pets need more calories to keep warm. Vitamin supplements are recommended as well.
